Gerontology (from the Greek γέρων, geron, “old man” and -λογία, -logia, “study of”; ) is the study of the social, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging.
Centuries old Ayurveda, the Ancient Indian traditional medicine, describes aging with great details. In Ayurveda, aging is known as “Jarā” defined as that which has become old by the act of wearing out “jīryati iti jarā”. It is synonymed as “vārdhakya” meaning increasing age.
Symptoms of chronological aging include dry and thin skin, fine wrinkles, abnormal blood vessels, age spots, benign and malignant skin tumors due to the deterioration of the skins immune system.
While we are young, our cells divide many times as we grow. Our cells are capable of repairing themselves, communicating with other cells, and interacting with all the physiological molecules that ultimately define our current state of health.
Aging appears to be a genetically programmed event. Scientists have found that the chromosomes in our cells progressively shorten each time the cell divides. Eventually, the chromosomes can shorten no further and stop dividing. When this happens, the cells become sleepy and die resulting in aging.
Normal Aging:
Do you feel like age is catching up with you? Have you noticed wrinkles, hair loss, reduced physical energy, or diminished sex drive? Do you get sick more often than you used to?
Although we typically think of the external signs of aging, with the emergence of wrinkles and graying hair, aging is also an internal process that has roots at the cellular level in all the organs of our bodies are made up of individual cells. Scientists have discovered that our cells have a limited capacity to divide and repair and hence normal aging occurs.
Premature Aging:
The modern day question is whether or not there is such a thing as “normal” aging. Given this question, it is good to think about premature aging.
Due to the effects of pollution of our air, food, environment, ubiquitous exposure to automobile exhaust, second-hand smoke and carbon monoxide, heavy metals, chemicals, food additives, etc., that we all age prematurely.
